Jobs fears in Sheffield Futures

(02/02/12) Management is planning to axe 23 out of 53 posts in the city’s youth service following interviews with staff next month.

There have already been a number of voluntary redundancies in Sheffield Futures. Management are now using the “matrix” performance assessment process.

A UNISON member in Sheffield Futures said youth workers were being forced to apply for their own jobs, which will involve submitting an application, being interviewed and assessed under the matrix. The interview counts for 50 per cent, the application 30 per cent and matrix 20 per cent of the overall scores.

The member said: “There is a lot of stress and anxiety about the future and we know that they want to attack our working conditions and introduce new working hours for staff.
“Young people are becoming more and more despondent, feeling there is nothing out there for them. To cut youth services at this time will mean a less intensive and effective service to get young people engaged and motivated to survive and develop. UNISON’s Regional Organiser is leading the negotiations and is working very hard to avoid compulsory redundancies. It is a very worrying time for the whole youth service and for the city as a whole.”
